Leave the brute force behind. It's easy enough to replace mountain bike grips. All you need is a spray and a thin tool to get in between the grip and the handlebar. There are specific sprays for the job on the market but you may find that cheap hairspray or deodorant will work. Don't use a spray lubricant.
When you've got the grips back on, replace the bar ends, follow Daniel's pro-tip and line up the logos, and you're good to go!
